    • Note
      • The Bible has so many informative accounts of YHWH's (YESHUA in this case) dealings with people. In the Old Covenant women was largely excluded from the accounts of Isreal's existence. Eve was the one that was created, she was deceived, every month...

YHWH judged Eve  for her trespass, instead of being cared for and being cherished, fulfilling the role of helper, she was demoted, her husband was to have total dominion and rule over her. Yet her longing was to have a husband, not to have children was akin to a curse...

She had no share in the religious leadership, she could not inherit, she could be divorced but not divorce her husband. In a society where work was mostly male oriented, it left her without income. Her father could marry her to whoever he wanted, and as a concubine, life was a misery, in fact one Hebrew word for vex - distress, trouble - means rival wife. Consider Hagar and Sarah, Lea and Rebekka, the gut wrenching account of Jud 19 and Lot who was willing to offer his daughters to men mad with lust..

With this as backdrop, one walks through the Bible, hasty to complete another circuit, missing beautiful flowers, mesmerising streams, the wonder of symbiotic relationships in nature - until one day, one stop to look at the wonder and beauty of nature...

I was reviewing a study done way back on the appearances of YESHUA in the Old Covenant, and the verses selected then appeared to be a bit sparce. It looked up the rest and a story followed that filled me with awe and respect for a woman that, from the information that is available to us, apparently fulfils YHWH's design for womanhood, perfectly.

    • V05 The barren woman
      • Jud 13:2 And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family, of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bore not.

        • This is a really remarkable woman. So sorry that we do not have her name.

She was barren and childless, a bitternes and a shame. See Sarah, Rebekka, Rachel, Naomi.

    • V10 The Angel
      • Jud 13:3 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.

        • From the context, it was the Presence of YHWH, YESHUA preincarnate, that were sent to speak to the woman. A few things to note here:

          The WOMAN was spoken to.

The WOMAN was given the instructions.

Why not the man? From the context it appears that hte woman was much more spiritually receptive than the husband, at least not as sceptical as he was.

    • V15 The instruction set
      • Jud 13:4 Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing:
      • Jud 13:5 For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand, of the Philistines.
    • V20 The wife's report to Manoah
      • Jud 13:6 Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence, he was, neither told he me his name:
      • Jud 13:7 But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.

        • If Eve was only as this woman. Would we still be in Eden? This woman was clearly submissiive to here husband and told her husband what was told her. Exactly the pattern we would expect from creation and what Paul instructs.

Note also that the woman was to follow Nazarte laws - at least until birth of the child - who would be nazarite from birth to death.

How a woman lives during pregnancy has a direct influence on the child?

    • V25 Manoah wanted to know himself how to bring up the child - even though his wife was told in all detail
      • Jud 13:8 Then Manoah entreated, the LORD, and said, O my Lord, let the man of God which thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.

        • Interesting what one can learn of people from the different Biblical accounts - how people have reacted upon instructions from YHWH. See Moses' first response at the burning bush, Gideon, Zacharias and others, who was not believing and or willing to follow the commands. Then there was Joseph that immediately and obediently responded.

This man was obviously cautious and sceptical, and wanted to the hear from the man himself, even though his told him the man was looking like an angel of YHWH, very terrifying - inducing fear and reverence. She was clearly spiritually perceptive.

    • V30 The Angel appeared again to Manoah's wife
      • Jud 13:9 And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her.
    • V35 The wife called her husband
      • Jud 13:10 And the woman made haste, and ran, and showed her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day.
      • Comment
        • Again the man appeared to the woman in the field. What was her immediate reaction? Asking the man to repeat the statements?  Obviously there was no uncertainty in her mind, but instead she ran (moved swiftly) to call her husband.

          If Eve...

Women, here is an example to follow - at least when you have a godly man, but even when he is not, pray for wisdom on how to handle the situation. The safest place for a wife is under the umbrella of a godly husbands authority.

    • V40 The wife led Manoah to the Angel
      • Jud 13:11 And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am.
      • Comment
        • The first time recorded that someone, a women nogal, leads someone else to YESHUA. We see the same thing with the woman at the well.

Women, you may/should guide your husband to the Lord.

    • V45 Manoah speaks to the Angel
      • Jud 13:12 And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order, the child, and how shall we do unto him?
      • Comment
        • Manoach do the right thing to check what his wife told him. He could have handle the issue a bit more tactful though. But the pattern is perfect - when someone else tell you what the Lord said which directly involve one, enquire self to confirm.

Many, many streams of tears could have been prevented if people did not miss this crucial step.

    • V50 The Angel answered - I have told the woman. Let her do so.
      • Jud 13:13 And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Of all, that I said unto the woman let her beware.
      • Comment
        • The man gave Manoach a slap on the wrist, Why did he not believe the woman, why should he hint that she did not hear correctly the first time.

But the man respected the relationship of man and wife - and instruct the husband to ensure the wife do as was commmanded.

Note again Gen 2. The man is watch over the woman, not to oppress and rule her, but to remind her and support her in fulfilling the commands.

    • V55 The angel repeats the instruction - and instructs Manoah that his wife should guard His command
      • Jud 13:14 She may not eat of any, thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.
    • V60 Manoah was ignorant of the fact that he was dealing with the Angel of the presence of YHWH Himself
      • Jud 13:15 And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, I pray thee, let us detain thee, until we shall have made ready a kid, for thee.
      • Jud 13:16 And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD. For Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD.
      • Comment
        • Strangely, even after this, Manoach wanted to ensure that the man is authentic. Which on  the one side is good, but certainly, when the Prsesence of YHWH appears to one, it should be quite apparent - as His appearance was as an angel and terrifying.

Was Manoach trying to do the same as Gideon?

    • V65 YESHUA did not make His real name known
      • Jud 13:17 And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honor?
      • Jud 13:18 And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?
      • Comment
        • Quite intriguing, Manoach ask the same question the same Angel asked Jacob. But the Angel declined to reveal His name, possibly to do with His coming to earth? It was in any case incomprehensible.

But one get the impression that Manoach is still somewhat suspicious and skeptical - he wanted to get a "handle" on man.

    • V70 YESHUA accepts offering
      • Jud 13:19 So Manoah took a kid, with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angel did wondrously; and Manoah and his wife looked on.
      • Jud 13:20 For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off, the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.
      • Comment
        • At the very moment that flames engulfs the food, reality strikes - and fear awe so overwhelms them - was the glory of YESHUA somewhat revealed, as Daniel experienced?

Anyway, nor Manoach's wife and Manoach had need for any more proof of this divine intervention.

    • V75 Manoah's histerical reaction and his wife's counsel
      • Jud 13:21 But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD.
      • Jud 13:22 And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God.
      • Jud 13:23 But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have showed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.

        • First skeptical. Now histerical. From one extreme to the other. Talk about an unstable personality. But look again at this woman - again showing one of the exact reasons that Adam was given a helper, an assistant. Him screaming his head off, she calmly consider the event and came to a very logical conclusion, and counsels her husband accordingly.

An excellent example of the prudent, wise and godly wife.

    • V80 The woman had a son, calling him Samson
      • Jud 13:24 And the woman bore a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him.
      • Jud 13:25 And the Spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.
      • Comment
        • The promise of the Man came about. And one of the more astonishing chapters in the young and rebellious Isreal's history is to begin.

An exceptional example of a godly woman, living amongst an effective pagan cultish Israel. Especially Dan was occupying the area where the angels descended from heaven to take human wives, and where YESHUA (that SAME angel) would challenge the dark domain to a deadly battle.

And even though she was exceptionally honoured - this appearance was kept to a very selected few, and honoured people - yet she submitted to her husband. And when he flew off his hook, obviously realising that he was unbelieving pressing the issue, she was counseling him with great insight and reason.

Note also YESHUA's special attention to women. Whilst on earth, He lifted them from the depths that they were in since Eden was behind Eve. He restored them to their rightful position - and as He restored to a great extent man to Adam before the fall, so He restored woman to Eve before the fall.
